Congratulations on the birth of your child!
We are excited and honored that you have chosen to have your child baptized here at St. Kilian and look forward to walking with your family as you grow in your faith!
The Sacrament of Baptism is the first step on your child's lifelong journey with Jesus and the Church. We aim to create a lasting relationship and home for you and your family here at our Parish. Please call our rectory at (516) 249-0127 or click to complete the "Baptism inquiry" form and we will be happy to assist you in the preparation and scheduling of your child's Baptism.
We also ask that you take a moment to read through our list of Frequently Asked Questions below:
WHEN DO BAPTISMS TAKE PLACE AT ST. KILIAN'S?
Baptisms are performed in the Church on Sunday afternoons at 2pm and are generally around one hour or less, depending on the number of children being baptized.
WHO CAN BE A GODPARENT?
A baptized and confirmed and practicing Catholic at least 16 years of age may be a godparent.
There may be two godparents. If there are two, one must be male and one female. While it is customary to have both a godmother and godfather, the Church requires only one godparent.
If there is one Catholic sponsor who fulfills the above requirements, another baptized Christian may act as a Christian witness. Former Catholics may not act as a Christian witness.
Parents of the child may not serve as his/her godparent.
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE GODPARENT?
The principal responsbility of a godparent is to give witness to the Catholic faith by his/her words and actions. Together with the parents, their role is to present the child for Baptism and to help them live a Christian life befitting the baptized, faithfully fulfilling the duties inherent in Baptism.
CAN SOMEONE WHO IS NOT A CATHOLIC BE A GODPARENT?
Someone who is a baptized Christian of a different faith may act as a Christian witness as long as there is also a Catholic godparent. The Christian witness is then considered a sponsor, not a godparent. This person must also be at least 16 years of age and be validly baptized. Non-Christian individuals, for example those of Jewish or Muslim faith, may not serve as a godparent or sponsor.
IS THERE A FEE?
No, there is no specified offering required. However, an offering envelope is provided for families who wish to make a donation for the support of the Parish. The Parish has various ongoing temporal needs and your support helps us to continue to provide services to our parish families. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
CAN WE TAKE PHOTOS?
Photos (and professional photographers) are permissible, although we remind you that is a sacred ceremony taking place in a Church. Please be mindful and considerate of other families and respectful of your surroundings.
Please note that there will also be an opportunity to take photos in the Church and on Church grounds as a family after the Baptism service has ended.
